I've hiked with both sets, When descending or when you need to use your toes more, like say walking over large boulders, It seems to be easier to keep your grip with the TOE sock inside the Whole sock. Than the two sock method. But YMMV. Since you dance and hike, maybe try out some Vibram shoes to cross train? Vibram shoes? The peculiar 5 toes shoes used to work some other muscles groups in your feet. I'm not at all a doctor. BTW. Just giving you an excuse to buy some 5 toe socks for your shoes. To try my method.
